When humans first noticed that stones were capable of retaining heat from a fire, they understood that such stones could also heat their dwellings fairly efficiently. And if they raised the temperature enough, the super-hot stones would lead to intensive sweating. Today, scientists have shown that our Stone Age ancestors used precisely this method as a form of physiotherapy.
Words for bath and sauna can be found in all European languages and in the languages of most peoples in Asia. In Europe, the ritual of going to the baths became popular at the end of the Middle Ages, with the exception of Finland and most of the Russian Empire. Interestingly, hot air was used both in the warmer regions of Europe and in Asia. Here, the practice goes back to the days of the Romans, who raised bathing to the level of a religious experience. In the East, Turkish steam baths have been famous for many centuries. But at a time when the history of steam evolved unevenly in most countries, the Finns can boast of their tradition of the sauna, which has been around for more than 2,000 years.
In addition, the bath was always called the “natural doctor.” “The bath steams, the bath fixes, the bath cures everything.” Heating the body encourages positive changes in the functions of organs and the entire system, strengthens metabolism, and develops the body’s own immune system and compensatory mechanisms.
